Embarking on the exciting journey of introducing solids through baby-led weaning?

Updated: Jul 22

Here are some tips to make this milestone a fun and nourishing experience for both you and your little one.

  1. Go at Their Pace: Let your baby take the lead. Start when they show interest, can sit up unassisted, and grasp objects. It's a gradual process, and patience is key.

  2. Offer a Variety: Present a rainbow of flavours and textures. From soft fruits to cooked veggies, exposing them to diverse tastes early can help develop a more adventurous palate.

  3. Mind the Size: Cut food into manageable, finger-sized pieces to minimise the risk of choking and ensure it softens easily when you squish it between your fingers.

  4. Family Mealtime: Make it a family affair. Eating together fosters a positive association with food and encourages social interaction.

  5. Trust the Mess: Accept that things might get messy. It's part of the exploration process and contributes to sensory development.

  6. Avoid Pressure: If they're not interested, don't force it. Every baby is different; some take time to warm up to new foods.

  7. Stay Balanced: While baby-led weaning encourages self-feeding, ensure a balanced diet. Iron-rich foods like red meat, liver and leafy greens are important for their growth.

  8. Watch for Allergies: Introduce one new food at a time and observe for any allergic reactions. This makes it easier to identify the culprit if any issues arise.

  9. Stay Hydrated: Offer sips of water in an age-appropriate cup during meals. It's a good habit to start early.

  10. Enjoy the Process: Embrace the messy faces, the exploration, and the joy of your baby discovering the wonderful world of flavours.

It's so special to watch your little one explore soilds, it's been and such a special chapter of their development.
